Japan and Sweden last faced each other in 2002.
Japan have been in exquisite form in the ongoing FIFA World Cup. In their opening game, they faced Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands. Early into the second half, captain Virgil van Dijk broke the deadlock for the Dutch side in the 51st minute.
However, Keito Nakamura did not waste much time in finding an equaliser for the Blue Samurai (57′). Crysencio Summerville scored the second goal for Oranje, and both goals by the Dutch side were assisted by Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch. However, late drama unfolded as Daichi Kamada scored Japan’s second goal, forcing a draw.
Ayase Ueda and Daichi Kamada are the joint top scorers of the side, as they have scored two goals each. While Keito Nakamura and Junya Ito have also got their names on the scoresheet.
In their last group-stage game of the FIFA World Cup, the Samurai Blue will face Sweden at the Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Thursday, June 25. Japan are competing neck and neck with the Dutch side in the race to finish top of Group H.
