Assim Madibo was sent off for a late challenge on Kone during the World Cup match tonight.
Canada beat Qatar 6-0 in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group B fixture at BC Place on June 18, but the occasion was marred by the horrific injury suffered by Ismael Kone. The Canadian midfielder was the victim of a late tackle from Assim Madibo in the second half, suffering what looked like a broken leg.
It was a mistimed tackle from Madibo, who swept Kone’s legs from behind in the 50th minute. Kone went down in excruciating pain, holding his leg, which seemed to be bent at the shin.
The home players were incensed by the challenge, confronting Madibo. The Qatari midfielder, meanwhile, looked shocked at the impact of his tackle. Chilean referee Cristian Garay opted to send Madibo off.
Meanwhile, the physios rushed to the pitch and tended to the injured player, while his teammates crowded around him to give him privacy. He was eventually stretchered off after having his leg stabilised, with the home supporters giving him a standing ovation. The official broadcast confirmed that Kone was taken to the hospital.
Despite being in a lot of pain and needing oxygen, Kone sat up and gave a thumbs-up reaction to the Canadian fans in the stadium. Still, his teammates were visibly shocked by the incident, with Jonathan David, who scored a hat-trick, moved to tears.

Jesse Marsch gives Ismael Kone update

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch spoke about his injured player after the matc. Although he did not reveal any specifics on the extent of the injury or the exact diagnosis, he stressed that the team will miss a player of his calibre.
“Ismael is such a great kid. He’s imperfect, but that is why we love him. He can do things that no other player can do. He embodies a lot of what this team is. He was our best player against Bosnia,” Marsch said.
“He is a huge loss for us. Our hearts are with him, but that kid has a huge future.”
Kone has been brilliant in both of Canada’s matches in the FIFA World Cup 2026 so far. Coming off a superb season with Italian club Sassuolo, he starred for his nation in the 1-1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
He played a big part in Canada leading by three goals at half-time. After he was forced off, the home side scored three more goals to secure a big win – their first in the flagship tournament.
