Jordan FIFA World Cup 2026

Jordan set for historic World Cup debut!

The Jordan national football team are set for a historic matchday as the nation is all set for their World Cup debut. The side will kick off this instrumental game in the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Austria, a team defined as one of the tournament’s potential surprises at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

The team has been making massive developments in recent years, scripting one of the most unbelievable stories in Asian football, as the nation miraculously made it all the way to the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, before losing to Qatar in the final.

Such a memorable outing will be a huge confidence boost for the nation as they prepare for the matchup against a star-studded Austrian side led by David Alaba. Under the manager Jamal Sellami, Jordan secured their spot after navigating through the AFC Asian Qualifiers, finishing second to secure automatic qualification.

However, Jordan’s performances in the recent pre-World Cup preparatory friendlies have been concerning. While they started with their campaign with impressive 2-2 draws against Costa Rica and Nigeria, they had miserable outings against 2026 World Cup competitors Switzerland and Colombia, losing 4-1 and 2-0, respectively.

All eyes will be on Musa Al-Taamari, described as the undisputed star of the squad. Dubbed as “Jordanian Messi”, he is the only member of the official World Cup roster playing in the European “Top 5” leagues. He will need to translate his domestic form to the grand stage after an impressive season with Rennes, managing an impressive 18 G/A in 36 appearances.

Who all will be expected to be in the Jordan starting lineup?

Manager Jamal Sellami is expected to line the team up in his signature 3-4-3 formation. This flexible structure allows the side to transition into a compact 5-4-1 formation when out of possession, relying on quick counterattacks and crosses to create scoring opportunities.

Abdallah Nasib, Yazan Al-Arab, and Saleem Obaid are set to form the three-man defence, with their chemistry built over the years, crucial for maintaining a low block. Well-known for their dual clearances and physicality, these talents will be instrumental for Jordan to achieve a result in the matchup

Captain Ehsan Haddad and Mohannad Abu Taha will operate in the wings, responsible for delivering high-quality crosses and tracking back efficiently when out of possession. Noor Al-Rawabdeh will assume the defensive midfielder role, while Nizar Al-Rashdan will start as a box-to-box midfielder.

Starman Musa Al-Taamari, known for his exceptional dribbling and acceleration, will play on the right, while energetic winger Odeh Fakhoury starts on the opposite flank. Versatile Ali Olwan will serve as the main striker, with the player required to fulfil the void left by Yazan Al-Naimat’s absence
