Julian Nagelsmann backs Florian Wirtz amid Liverpool criticism

The German midfielder joined Liverpool ahead of the 2025-26 season.

Florian Wirtz caught the eye of many people with his performances for Bayer Leverkusen since the 2023-24 season. He was one of the most important stars of the Bundesliga side during their league title win in the respective season.

The German midfielder continued with his superb performances, but the Werkself were only able to clinch the German Super Cup title during their 2024-25 campaign. After the season ended, he wanted to join the Merseyside club Liverpool, and the deal went through.

The Reds signed Florian Wortz on a five-year deal for a £100 million guaranteed transfer fee plus an additional £16 million in add-ons. This also made him the Bundesliga’s most expensive outgoing transfer. It broke the record previously held by Ousmane Dembele.

Everything was going well for Wirtz, until this move. His performances for Liverpool have not been good enough as of now. Before the international break of October 2025, the Merseyside club lost two back-to-back matches in the Premier League and against Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League.

Florian Wirtz hasn’t been able to score a single goal or bag an assist for the Reds since the start of the season. Some people see this as a major issue, but for others, he has been a crucial part of Liverpool in the midfield. His current form may indicate a need of shake up, but he is still adapting to the league.

It was also backed by Germany’s head coach.

Julian Nagelsmann takes a stand for Florian Wirtz

The 22-year-old is a crucial asset for the Germany national football team. He came up with top performances for his side in the recent UEFA Nations League campaign. As per Julian Nagelsmann, Wirtz is key for the four-time World Champions.

During a recent interview with Sport 1, Nagelsmann said, “Even though he hasn’t scored any goals, he’s still the player who creates the most chances in the Premier League. It’s not his fault if his teammates don’t convert them, and the statistics don’t even tell the whole story.”

Florian Wirtz has played 90 minutes in each of Germany’s first three FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

“Wirtz needs to get used to the league. I saw him playing with total freedom. He knows what he’s capable of and how things work,” Nagelsmann added further.

Previously, Jurgen Klopp also came in to support Wirtz and dismissed the concerns of him being a flop at Liverpool.
