After completing his contentious move to Al-Hilal, Karim Benzema allegedly upset former Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo. The French forward allegedly sent a joke about the Saudi Pro League title to him who had taken strike action at Al-Nassr.
In order to bolster their claims to a first domestic title during his time in the Middle East, CR7 had hoped that Al-Nassr would finish additional work by doing another recruitment in the January market.
No big-name acquisitions were finalised, and competitors garnered greater media attention. When Karim Benzema ended his time at Al-Ittihad, he was the one who made the most noise.
Karim Benzema is thrilled with his 2026 start, having had a wonderful debut at Al-Hilal. On his first appearance for his new employers, he scored a hat-trick. Cristiano Ronaldo had started to exclude himself from consideration for Al-Nassr’s selection by that point.
The Telegraph has stated that the Portuguese, a five-time Golden Ball winner, great has missed two games because he is “angry about Al-Nassr’s low-key January trading.” Al-Nassr spent over €400 million (£348 million/$476 million) since Cristiano Ronaldo arrived at the club.
The former Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus star is also reportedly earning around £500,000 per day under the most lucrative contract in global sport.
Benzema irked Ronaldo with Saudi title joke
According to The Telegraph, Benzema‘s cheerful conversation with former Madrid teammate Ronaldo has soured the latter’s mood.
Benz reportedly “thought he could earn a bit more after looking at his Al-Ittihad deal.” The Frenchman “told Ronaldo in jest that not only had he received a pay raise but he was also going to win the title again” after securing a pay raise at Al-Hilal.
The 41-year-old Ronaldo has made it clear that he is determined to enjoy the Saudi title triumph in 2025–2026, so it is unlikely that the taunt went over well in his home.
