Manchester City confirmed he will leave the club after the end of the season.

According to ESPN, Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne’s discovery rights are held by Inter Miami CF, which suggests that the Belgian playmaker may move to South Florida to join Lionel Messi.

The player announced on social media that he is going to leave Man City when his contract with the English club expires at the end of the current campaign. Since 2015, the 33-year-old has been a key member of the Cityzen’s squad and helped them to many major titles.

After his current deal expires, Kevin De Bruyne will be a free agent. If he decides to play in the top division of North America, Inter Miami will be granted the first opportunity to discuss terms with him because they own his MLS discovery rights.

MLS regulations regarding discovery rights & roster

According to MLS regulations, clubs are permitted to add a maximum of five players to their discovery roster at any one time. Without competition from other MLS clubs, the team that lists the player has the sole right to start discussions first.

Kevin De Bruyne was linked with San Diego FC last summer

Last summer, the Belgium international was linked to San Diego FC, a 2025 MLS expansion team. However, Tyler Heaps, the sporting director, put an end to the rumours that he won’t join the team because of financial problems.

“I’ve had conversations with him, but I’ll tell you what: Those wages won’t fit our budget at the moment in terms of what his expectations are,” Heaps said at the time.

Messi, Luis Suárez, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets are already on the Herons’ all-star lineup, but they could benefit from De Bruyne’s expertise when they play in international competitions in 2025.

In addition to playing in the current MLS regular season, which started at the end of February, Inter Miami will compete in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and Leagues Cup this summer.

During his trophy-rich tenure at the Etihad Stadium, De Bruyne was a member of teams that claimed five Carabao Cups, two FA Cups, two Community Shields, and a Champions League in addition to his six Premier League triumphs with City.
