El Tri bagged an easy 2-0 win.
Led by Javier Aguirre, the Mexico national football team put in a good performance in the opening 2026 FIFA World Cup match against the South Africa national football team.
This victory puts them at the top of Group A. It was a well-balanced effort by Javier Aguirre’s men, who always expected to begin their campaign on a positive note.
The Mexico national football team have quality players in the squad and it looks like they will not face much difficulty while going through the group stage. Raul Rangel and Guillermo Ochoa are strong goalkeeper options for Aguirre.
Israel Reyes, Cesar Montes, Johan Vasquez and Jesus Gallardo did make up a strong backline for Mexico in the opening clash against the Republic of South Africa.
Establishing control in the midfield are Brian Gutierrez, Erik Lira and Alvaro Fidalgo. They maintained quite a good balance between attack and defence. In the final third, Julian Quinones scored the first goal of the FIFA World Cup 2026. He has Raul Jimenez and Roberto Alvarado to support him in the attacking front.

Five important things we learned:
1. High press a key weapon for Mexico
From the beginning, Javier Aguirre’s men stepped on the gas and looked to get past the South African defence. They came up with an early goal after Julian Quinones found the back of the net in the ninth minute. Raul Jimenez made it 2-0 after netting an important header in the 67th minute.
The Mexico national football team built constant pressure against Bafana Bafana and they were indeed successful in securing three important points in the end.
2. Opening goal of FIFA World Cup 2026

Julian Quinones became the first player to score a goal at the 2026 edition of FIFA’s flagship tournament. He came in with a sensational strike during the ninth minute and helped El Tri gain a 1-0 advantage. The Al Qadsiah forward was a constant threat to the opponent’s defence with his movement down the left flank.
3. South Africa’s vulnerable defence
Even with five defenders in the back line, Bafana Bafana made several mistakes which proved costly for them. They failed to anticipate Mexico’s attack on multiple occasions. Even though they only conceded two goals, they looked under pressure throughout the game. Hugo Broos must evaluate the tactics for the remaining group stage games.
4. Brian Gutiérrez, the heart of Mexico’s midfield
From controlling the ball well in the midfield to being a constant threat in the attacking front, Brian Gutiérrez put in a top performance against South Africa. Even though he failed to score a goal, his multiple attempts on goal from outside the box made it tough for Bafana Bafana. Gutiérrez will continue to play an important role under Javier Aguirre.
5. Multiple red cards
After a reckless tackle in the 50th minute, Yaya Sithole was shown a straight red card. This reduced the South Africa national football team to 10-men. Then a poor challenge by Themba Zwane saw him get a red card. These dismissals further shifted the momentum towards Mexico, and Hugo Broos’ men came under increased pressure. This leaves a serious void in Bafana Bafana’s midfield.
El Tri captain Cesar Montes was sent off after a straight red card for his tackle during 90+2 minutes. It will now be interesting to see who Javier Aguirre will choose as a centre-back for the next fixture.
