Kylian Mbappe is France’s all-time top scorer in the FIFA World Cup.
Two-time champions France are set to face Iraq in their second group stage game of the FIFA World Cup. France’s captain, Kylian Mbappe, who scored twice during Les Bleus’ opening game against Senegal, is one of the top stars to watch out for.
Since making his debut in the FIFA World Cup in 2018 against Peru, Mbappe has scored 16 goals in 15 appearances for France. He’s already Les Bleus’ all-time top scorer in international football and in the World Cup; however, he’s currently aiming for a greater prize.
The 27-year-old is currently active in the race to break former German forward Miroslav Klose’s record of most goals in the tournament’s history. Klose scored 16 goals in four campaigns, while Lionel Messi, who recently tied the record, has reached the same peak in six campaigns (27 appearances).
Mbappe has an opportunity to do the same, or even more, in only his third World Cup campaign. Before Les Bleus faced Iraq, the Frenchman was asked about his choice for the best player in the world.

Kylian Mbappe chooses the best player between Harry Kane, Erling Haaland, Lionel Messi and himself

Kylian Mbappe was asked in a pre-match press conference to name the best player between Harry Kane, Erling Haaland, Lionel Messi and himself. Among the four given names in the question, the 27-year-old chose eight-time Ballon d’Or champion Lionel Messi over himself, Kane and Haaland.
Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was not originally a part of the question, but Mbappe, who has grown up idolising the former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward, brought him in his answer. Replying to the question, he said:
“The best among Kane, Haaland, Messi, and me? 4 players? Lionel Messi! It’s clear. He’s the best. The best in the world with Cristiano [Ronaldo]. It’s clear.”
The French skipper humbly avoided the question of appearing on his resume. Mbappe further added:
“Me? I try to do what I can do. I show my quality on the biggest stage, helping my team to win another World Cup. For the rest, it’s a debate for the people, debate for the fans.”
On Matchday 1 of the 2026 World Cup, Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick while Harry Kane, Erling Haaland and Mbappe scored a brace each. However, Ronaldo has a tough time getting his name on the scoresheet.
How many goals have Mbappe scored for France?
Mbappe has scored 58 goals for France in 99 caps.
When did Mbappe become the captain of Les Bleus?
He was named the captain of the side in March 2023.
