Kylian Mbappe ruled out of Spanish Super Cup clash with Atletico Madrid

The Frenchman sustained a knee injury.

The French superstar’s participation in Thursday’s semifinal match against Atlético Madrid is already regarded as ruled out, despite the club openly citing Tuesday morning’s session as the time to decide whether or not Kylian Mbappé could play in the Super Cup. The player worked out three days before the game against city rivals in the Spanish Super Cup

Kylian Mbappe had previously missed the Madrid derby, which took place at the Metropolitano in September of last year. He has scored twice in the four derbies he has participated in, both in LaLiga.

The 27-year-old’s left knee injury, which had been ailing him for a few weeks, was diagnosed on New Year’s Eve. For this reason, he did not play against Manchester City on December 10.

Mbappe’s problem has lingered for long

Since then, the problem has lingered, and the forward has continued to face the same issue during the games. Eventually, he had to be ruled out after he couldn’t continue due to the injury.

Without him being present for Real Betis‘ game, Madrid demonstrated an impressive performance and put five goals past them in the LaLiga game, with Gonzalo Garcia netting a hat-trick.

Hence, his absence shouldn’t be a big worry, although Kylian Mbappe has produced the majority of Madrid’s goals this season.

With 29 goals this season, Kylian Mbappé has only missed 11 of Madrid’s 94 games since joining in the summer of 2024. He has never missed more than two consecutive games due to short-term injuries, except for the gastroenteritis he contracted during the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, which kept him out of action for three games.
