LAFC make bumper contract offer to Antoine Griezmann

Griezmann has previously said he is eager to join MLS.

Los Angeles FC (LAFC) are interested in signing Antoine Griezmann. They are willing to offer the Frenchman one of the most lucrative offers. It will make him the second-highest-paid player in Major League Soccer, only behind Lionel Messi. 

The former Barcelona star has one year left on his contract. If Atletico Madrid fails to hand Griezmann another deal, this will allow the MLS side to sign Griezmann as a free agent next season. 

The 33-year-old has already made his feelings clear about playing in the MLS. A move will be possible if the Spanish club does not provide him with a new deal. Griezmann has a €10 million release clause in his contract with the LaLiga club, meaning he would be also able to leave for a relatively small fee this campaign. 

The MLS club shouldn’t face any issues activating his clause. But it also depends on Griezmann’s decision to whether leave the Spanish club this summer or as a free agent next season. 

If Griezmanna accepts the move to MLS, then he will follow his compatriots Hugo Lloris and Olivier Giroud to the USA. He will also join his ex-Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi who plays for Inter Miami in the league. 

However, another issue that could hinder his move to LAFC is that he has ambitions of playing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will take place in North America. Most probably, after that, he will make any decision on playing for the MLS side. 

The Frenchman has adapted to a new position. He now operates as No.10 which allows him to provide goalscoring chances to the forwards, and he has been excelling in that area for club and national team.

Griezmann’s career with France has been illustrious so far, playing in two World Cup finals and winning one. The only major international trophy that has been eluded is the Euro. It is unlikely that he will be in the national team for the next Euro. The recently concluded Euro 2024 saw France getting eliminated by Spain in the semi-final of the competition. 

Meanwhile, since returning from Barcelona, Griezmann has been Atletico’s key player last season and should play another imperative role in this campaign.

The Frenchman will hope to win the LaLiga title, which he has failed to win at Barcelona or Atletico, despite spending so many years here.
