The Spanish league joins the Premier League to have five teams in the UCL.

After securing another spot for club performance across the three European UEFA tournaments, LaLiga will join the Premier League, in having five teams’ spots in the Champions League the following season.

A European Performance Spot (EPS), which was implemented last season as part of a change to make the Champions League a 36-team competition, is awarded to two leagues.

England has maintained a strong lead throughout the season. UEFA announced that they will receive an extra berth on April 8. After Athletic Club defeated Rangers and Lazio was eliminated from the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, Spain was certain of finishing in the top two.

Spain’s LaLiga and England’s Premier League will now both be eligible for the fifth spot in the Champions League next season.

The race for the top five in the Premier League is extremely close. Manchester City (58) are in fourth place, Nottingham Forest (57) are in sixth, and Newcastle United (59) are in third. Aston Villa (57) and Chelsea (57) are just sitting outside the top four.

The top four in LaLiga are obvious. Therefore, it looks like Villarreal (52, with a game in hand) and Real Betis (48) are vying for fifth place. Mallorca and Celta Vigo are also in the race for the fifth spot.

The Premier League might have a maximum of six spots in the Champions League. The top five, plus if either Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspur wins the Europa League, they will get a Champions League spot next season.

Germany and Italy benefited from their strong finish in European competitions last season, with Bologna and Borussia Dortmund finishing in fifth place in their respective league standings in that season.

However, this time Spain and England enjoyed a better season in European competition and have reaped the rewards for this.
