LaLiga hoping to host Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid match in Miami, US
FIFA will take the final decision as LaLiga hopes of hosting their games in Miami.
Barcelona’s match against Atletico Madrid in December could take place in Miami, LaLiga officials are hopeful that FIFA will approve their plan.
It could be the first time that a LaLiga game will be played in the United States. However, it’s not in the Spanish league’s hands to make the final decision as FIFA, the football governing body, will make the ultimate choice on the proposal.
Barcelona’s first LaLiga match of this season against Atletico will be on 22nd December. After that, the league will take a winter break pause from the matches.
Following that both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are set to play in the four-team Spanish Super Cup in January which is being held in Saudi Arabia.
In April FIFA withdrew the decision of a legal challenger by match promoter Relevent, who were seeking to host overseas matches in the USA.
However, the next month the football governing body said they were exploring options to look at the potential impact of the domestic football matches held abroad.
Meanwhile, LaLiga president Javier Tebas had earlier confirmed that he wants to host some of the league games in the USA. Previously Barcelona had planned to play a match against Girona in Miami in January 2019. But the idea was later scrapped after protests from Spain’s football association and its players’ union.
League sources reveal that there is still some work to do before the plans kick off and FIFA approve their requests. Meanwhile, the Premier League has no intention to host the league matches overseas.
If FIFA does approve LaLiga request then there will certainly be criticism from the fans and unquestionably the Spain FA will do everything in their power to prevent any teams play the matches abroad as they did before.
It will be interesting to see what decision FIFA will make. If they allow LaLiga to host their matches in the United States expect fans to protest.
