LaLiga matches to be hosted in USA? Javier Tebas reveals latest plans

LaLiga plan to expand their viewership in North America

Beginning with the 2025–2026 season, LaLiga is anticipated to play competitive matches abroad, with the United States being the initial destination.

LaLiga president Javier Tebas affirmed that the Spanish top division hopes to travel abroad, with the first international match planned for 2025–2026. The first anticipated destination is the US, where La Liga hopes to take advantage of the increased interest in football leading up to the 2026 World Cup.

In the past, Spanish teams have expressed interest in making such a move abroad. Barcelona, for example, suggested holding a Catalan derby against Girona in Miami in 2018; however, the match was vetoed by US Soccer and FIFA.

Foreign leagues are more likely to stage games abroad as a result of the lawsuit that organisers Relevant Sports filed against both parties.

In an interview with the Spanish publication Expansion, Tebas disclosed that he is working on a US fixture:

Although the league has not yet disclosed its ambitions, it is likely that international competitions are being considered. Targeting 2025–2026 would seem to be the best fit given that the World Cup will be held in the US, Canada, and Mexico.

“I don’t know when, but this time LaLiga will play official matches abroad, I think it could be in the 2025-26 season. The official match in the US will strengthen our position in the North American market, which is the second for LaLiga after Spain. Other very competitive leagues are coming so we can’t always do the same thing, they would overtake us.”

Still, it’s another step towards the disenfranchisement of local supporters, who were once an integral part of football teams. These clubs are no longer integral parts of their communities, and denying the residents access to a game—presumably at exorbitant costs—means that they are losing their place in the community.

It’s also a genuine risk that a large number of supporters of the teams they root for will be priced out of the games in order to maximise their financial benefit.
