The top four will play in a knockout round to determine the winner of the league.

The French football federation is considering a daring change to the structure of Ligue 1, suggesting that play-offs be used to choose the champion. This idea sparked excitement but was quickly abandoned.

Rumours of a play-off system reminiscent of rugby’s exciting finale surfaced as part of their drive for a radical approach to French football governance, which included the possible dissolution of the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP).

This ambitious idea envisaged that, following the regular season, the crowning of the French winner would take place through a high-stakes, knockout tournament.

Many believed that this concept was ideal for Paris Saint-Germain’s dominance, which has been indisputable since the club’s well-publicised purchase by Qatari investors.

However, the allure of this ground-breaking idea was quickly thwarted. A wide range of football community stakeholders expressed their concerns, in addition to PSG’s leadership. Insider Pierre Rondeau noted that the initiative was quickly abandoned due to a chorus of criticism.

There was a lot of discussion and excitement about this plan, which demonstrated how deeply everyone was invested in the development of French football. But for the time being, Ligue 1‘s cornerstone is still the conventional league structure.

The top-tier French women’s football league, the Arkema Première Ligue, already uses this structure, with the top-seeded team playing the fourth-place team in a semi-final. The second and third-place teams will play each other in the second semi-final. The winners are then decided in the final.

L’Equipe continues by saying that a number of Ligue 1 stakeholders have positively embraced this proposition. According to the site, the task group is also thinking about bringing back the Coupe de Ligue, but only for teams that don’t compete in UEFA competitions.

A French FA task force headed by Toulouse president Damien Comolli is considering the creation of a Final Four tournament, the winner of which would receive the title, in an apparent attempt to restore danger and tension in a time of complete dominance by PSG, who have won the Ligue 1 championship for the fourth time in a row.
