The Argentine star talks about all three kids and the impact they had on his life.
Three extremely significant supporters cheered Lionel Messi on as he helped Argentina defeat France in the 2022 FIFA World Cup: his sons Mateo, Thiago, and Ciro.
After the game, the soccer player, who scored two goals in the exciting battle, experienced a nice moment with two of his children. The boys were wearing jerseys with their father’s name and number (10) on the back, and they gave him a hug.
Their mother, Antonella Roccuzzo, and youngest brother soon joined them and shared a number of adorable pictures for the family get-together.
Lionel Messi has stated that he wants his sons to “do what makes them happy,” whether or not that includes playing soccer. Nevertheless, it is evident that his boys are already carrying on their father’s skill. In addition to spending a significant portion of their childhoods on the pitch supporting Messi, Thiago, Mateo, and Ciro are all rising soccer stars in their own right.
Nonetheless, Lionel Messi periodically posts videos of himself and his sons playing friendly games, suggesting that the lads learn their best lessons at home.
Everything you need to know further about Lionel Messi and Antonella Roccuzzo’s three boys is provided here.
Thiago Messi Roccuzzo, 12
On November 2, 2012, Messi and Roccuzzo welcomed their son Thiago into the world, marking their first parenthood. Lionel Messi got his newborn son’s name and handprints permanently inked on his calf shortly after his birth as a way to display his affection for him.
Messi told El Periódico in 2013 that Thiago had a significant influence on his life: “My son has changed my life more than the Ballon d’Or [awards] have.”
The soccer player added that after becoming a father, his priorities changed: “When I look at life, think about each moment, when I analyze every situation … Now everything is different.”
In a 2016 column for Sports Illustrated, Lionel Messi stated that despite his well-known job, his life off the field appears to be no different from that of any other father.
“A typical day involves taking Thiago to school, going to training, hanging out at home drinking maté and spending time with Anto and the kids at the park or somewhere,” he described. “It’s a normal, calm life, the kind of life we have always wanted.”
Thiago, now 12, began playing football at an early age and was once a member of Barcelona’s academy, as Messi played for the team from 2004 to 2021. A clip of Thiago scoring a goal in his first game with Barcelona went viral in February 2020, and fans immediately hailed him as a young protégé. He now plays for Inter Miami’s under-12 team after his time with the Paris Saint-Germain academy.
Mateo Messi Roccuzzo, 9
On September 11, 2015, Messi and Roccuzzo welcomed Mateo, their second child.
Additionally, Lionel Messi claims Mateo inherits his competitive nature, while the soccer player characterises Thiago as the “calm” sibling. “Mateo is the same as me when I was little, he doesn’t like to lose anything,” Messi said to journalist Sebastián Vignolo of Argentina.
Mateo’s father’s soccer career is a reflection of his competitive nature. The athlete informed reporters that Mateo sobbed as he left the stadium following Lionel Messi and his team’s heartbreaking defeat to Saudi Arabia in November. “My family suffer the same as all Argentines, but we are happy and we get comfortable again because now our progress depends on us,” he stated.
Ciro Messi Roccuzzo, 7
On March 10, 2018, Ciro, Messi and Roccuzzo’s third son, was born.
His mother and father both have tattoos honouring their youngest child. Roccuzzo has “Ciro” inked on her arm, while Messi has Ciro’s name and birthdate etched on his calf along with the initials of his other sons.
According to Messi, Ciro’s personality is constantly evolving. He is already inheriting his big brother’s traits, though. When Messi stated in October 2022, “He copies Mateo a lot, and they go against me a lot.”
Messi told Sports Illustrated that the birth of his three sons was “life-changing” when Ciro was just eight months old. He stated, “I’m ecstatic about the family we have been able to create,” in his essay.
