Messi was seen wiping away tears after scoring the first goal against Algeria.

Lionel Messi stole the spotlight with a magnificent hat-trick in Argentina’s FIFA World Cup 2026 match against Algeria on June 16. However, the Argentine maestro shocked the world when he was seen crying after scoring the opening goal in the 17th minute.

However, the Inter Milan star clarified that the reason behind his tears was not because of anything that happened during the match. Instead, he cited an unspecified personal problem as the cause.

“I cried after the first goal, yes,” Messi said. “But it was something completely unrelated to football. I went through some difficult days, but I’m grateful to the entire delegation and my teammates because they were always by my side, giving me a lot of strength to help me get through it.”

The sublime performance put Messi level with Miroslav Klose as the all-time top-scorers in the World Cup with 16 goals. The Argentine will have the chance to break the record when La Albiceleste face Austria in their next outing on June 22.

According to reports from Argentine journalist Eduardo Feinmann, Messi was teary-eyed because of his father Jorge’s health problems.

“This has to do with his father. His father is not in good health,” Feinmann said on Radio Mitre. “For quite some time now, several months, since last year. And this week, there were some situations that slightly worsened his health, and Messi is going through this internal struggle. In other words, like any human being.”

Jorge has been close to his son throughout Messi’s life, standing by his side as the Argentine forward moved to Spain to play for FC Barcelona. According to reports, Jorge still plays a major role in his son’s career even though the former stays in Rosario.

Meanwhile, the number 10 will be looking to continue his good form in the FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage, with Argentina looking to win their fourth title.
