Lionel Messi becomes first player to score in seven consecutive FIFA World Cup games

Messi scored his 19th goal of the tournament with a free kick in the 80th minute. In addition to adding to his World Cup record, he became the first player to score in seven consecutive World Cup games as Argentina triumphed 3-1.
Argentina had already won Group J owing to Messiâs five goals in the first two games. He did not start Saturday night.
He scored his first World Cup hat trick against Algeria, tying Miroslav Kloseâs record of 16 goals. Messi went on to score two more goals against Austria.
With the game against Jordan coming three days after his 39th birthday, manager Lionel Scaloni rested him till the 60th minute.

Before the Saturday game, Lionel Messi became one of just three players to score in six consecutive World Cup games, along with Just Fontaine and Jairzinho. Throughout the 1958 World Cup, Fontaine scored 13 goals. He only played in one World Cup.
Jairzinho scored seven goals in six games for Brazil in the 1970 World Cup before going blank against Yugoslavia in the 1974 World Cup to halt his run.
The last occasion Lionel Messi did not score a goal in a World Cup game was Argentinaâs 2-0 victory over Poland in the final game of the 2022 World Cup group stage. That was the only game he did not score in the entire Argentinaâs 2022 championship run. Lionel Messi missed a penalty during the victory against Poland.
Overall, Messi has 13 goals in his previous 10 World Cup appearances, including eight in his last four. He scored a penalty kick in the first half as Argentina defeated France in the World Cup 2022 final.
