Lionel Messi gives subtle hint about playing in 2026 FIFA World Cup

Lionel Messi, the captain of Argentina, has hinted at playing in the 2026 World Cup after Inter Miami defeated Club America in a friendly clash to start 2025.
Since Messi will be 39 years old when La Albiceleste try to defend their title, there have been concerns over his ability to play in the 2026 World Cup that will be held in the US, Canada, and Mexico. But following the Herons’ first 2025 friendly, the Inter Miami star gave a subliminal clue about his involvement in the competition.
The 2024 Major League Soccer Supporters’ Shield champions won the match 3-2 on penalties after Messi scored in the 2-2 draw with Club America in regular time.
Speaking to TN after the game, Messi said: “We have been doing preseason, we have few training sessions. So it helps us to continue growing with a new coach and to continue improving.”
When asked about whether he will play at the 2026 World Cup, Messi added: “I’m just starting the year, I’m starting it very excited, with a lot of desire. I hope I can start feeling well and start with a good preseason, adding minutes to be in the best shape when the official matches come.”
When Inter Miami face the daunting task of playing against some of the top teams in the entire globe at the 2025 Club World Cup, which will be hosted in the United States later this year, they will be counting on Messi can stay healthy and reach his maximum potential. The Herons have been put in Group A alongside Palmeiras, Porto, and Al Ahly.
Messi is also in talks with the club to extend his deal for another year as his current contract with Inter Miami will run out after the end of this year.
When will Lionel Messi be back in action?
Now Javier Mascherano’s team face Universitario in another friendly match on January 29, Messi is expected to be back to action with Inter Miami. On February 22, Miami will play New York City FC in the opening match of the 2025 Major League Soccer season.
