Messi has already scored 902 career goals so far.

Lionel Scaloni has stated that the Argentina captain has the “desire” to compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He has also thrown his support behind Lionel Messi’s potential to attain the historic 1,000 career goals milestone.

Speaking after a commanding, friendly victory over Zambia, La Albiceleste manager stressed that even though the Inter Miami player has already realised his greatest dream in Qatar, he still has the will to fight at the top level.

After Argentina defeated Zambia 5-0 at La Bombonera, with Lionel Messi scoring and providing an assist, attention soon turned to the future of the nation’s legendary leader.

In addition to outlining his position on the forthcoming North American competition, Scaloni didn’t hesitate to forecast previously unheard-of achievements for the 38-year-old.

Even though Cristiano Ronaldo is now leading the race to 1,000 goals in Saudi Arabia, Scaloni is still optimistic that Lionel Messi will be able to join him in that elite group.

The manager addressed the possibility that Lionel Messi, who presently has 902 career goals, would reach the significant career milestone by saying:

“He could reach 1,000 goals, we’ll have to see how much longer he plays. The thing is, he has to want to keep going. I hope he does, because he’s happy on the pitch and we all want to see him. One year he scored over 90 goals – he can get there.”

The reigning champions will face Algeria, Austria, and Jordan in the group stages of the 2026 World Cup, which is an enormous challenge.

The focus is now on fun and team success because Lionel Messi is more at ease after his 2022 victory. But fans of the Inter Miami star worldwide will surely find the quest for 1,000 goals to be an intriguing subplot.

How many career goals has Messi scored so far?

He has netted 902 career goals.

How many goals has he scored for Argentina?
