List of all father & son duos who have played in Premier League
The English top flight has seen father and their sons play in the league.
The Premier League has witnessed many father-and-son duos. Some sons have even continued their (father’s) legacy by playing for their former teams. From Peter Schmeichel who played for Manchester United to his son Kasper Schmeichel representing the club, we have witnessed such glorious moments in the league.
Earlier this campaign, Archie Gray earned his Tottenham Hotspur debut. Andy Gray, his father, played forward for Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, and Leeds United in 51 competitive games.
More astoundingly, Archie’s grandfather, Frank, claimed a European Cup as a player, and his great-uncle, Eddie, coached Leeds in the Premier League. With Archie’s debut, there are now 26 Premier League players whose fathers were also players in the same division previously.
Most notable fathers and sons to play in the Premier League
Peter Schmeichel and Ian Wright, two of the top players from the first Premier League season (1992–1993), have witnessed their sons achieve remarkable achievements in the league.
Kasper Schmeichel completed 284 appearances in the Premier League, just 26 fewer than his father Peter, a five-time champion with Manchester United, and won the championship with Leicester City in 2015–16.
Wright, who netted 113 goals in 213 Premier League games, has two sons, Bradley Wright-Phillips and Shaun Wright-Phillips, who both competed in the top division.
Before having stints at Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers, Shaun made his Premier League debut for Manchester City after graduating from the club’s academy. Bradley made 32 appearances for City as well.
Shaun has made the most outings (315), followed by Jack Cork (304), among all the sons of Premier League players who have participated in the competition.
Steve Bruce and Paul Ince played for the same Manchester United team as Peter Schmeichel, which won the championship in 1992–1993. Both of their kids, Alex Bruce and Tom Ince, played together at Hull City in 2014–15 and have 48 Premier League games between them.
When Erling Haaland joined Man City, he followed in his father Alf-Inge Haaland’s footsteps. He immediately made an impression by earning a historic treble in his amazing 2022–2023 debut season. In 2023–2024, he followed that feat with a second consecutive Premier League victory and Golden Boot award.
Between 1994 and 2004, Alf played 181 games for Manchester City, Leeds United, and Nottingham Forest.
Brennan Johnson had a fantastic debut season in 2022–2023 as well. His father, David Johnson, was an Ipswich Town player in 2000–01. The striker helped Nottingham Forest earn a spot in the top division by scoring eight goals and dishing out three assists.
Johnson overcame an unspectacular beginning in north London after joining Spurs in August 2023 to end the 2023–24 campaign with five goals and ten assists. He has scored three goals in Spurs’ first eight Premier League games of the 2024–25 season, putting him in excellent form.
More to happen this season?
With several players seeking to follow in their fathers’ paths and make their Premier League debuts, the list may continue to expand in 2024–2025.
Southampton’s summer acquisition, the 22-year-old Nathan Wood, who came from Swansea City of the EFL Championship, is the son of Dean Gordon, a former defender for Crystal Palace and Middlesbrough.
After playing for Brentford’s B team the previous season, Kyreece Lisbie, a winger, hopes to follow in his father’s footsteps and play in the first team.
The son of former Leeds and Manchester City defender Danny Mills, Stanley Mills intends to compete for a spot in Sean Dyche’s starting lineup for Everton this season. In August 2023, Stanley went on loan to Oxford United of League One, but his season was cut short by a knee injury.
