The Dutchman’s deal expires at the end of the season.

Virgil van Dijk, the captain of Liverpool, has stated that he has begun negotiations with the team to sign a new contract.

The 33-year-old’s current deal expires at the end of the current campaign. He has been at Anfield since January 2018.

“Discussions are ongoing, we will see what happens in the future,” said Netherlands centre-back Van Dijk. My full focus is on Liverpool, wanting to win games that are ahead of me and nothing else

“What the future will bring I have no idea at the moment. I can only tell you that discussions have started and we will see.”

Meanwhile, there is currently no development on the status of Egypt forward Mohamed Salah and England international Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose contracts also expire next summer.

Van Dijk, who cost the Reds £75 million to acquire from Southampton, has contributed to their victories in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup.

With seven wins from their first eight games this campaign, he has assisted Liverpool in taking the lead in the Premier League under their new boss and fellow Dutchman Arne Slot.

Liverpool boast the greatest defensive record in the Premier League 2024-25 season thanks in large part to Van Dijk, who has helped them give up just three goals this season.

Although Van Dijk’s announcement that he is in talks with the club is a pleasant update and an alleviation to the club’s supporters, the Dutch defender left an air of ambiguity regarding his future as negotiations proceeded, maybe as a negotiating technique.

There is no doubt about Van Dijk’s significance to Liverpool. In his ten appearances this season, he has contributed to six clean sheets, making him a significant presence for the Reds.

Prior to the victory over Chelsea, Liverpool manager Slot discussed the influence his captain had on and off the field. Slot will hope that his captain’s future is sorted out as soon as possible.
