Top three long-term Marc-Andre ter Stegen replacements at Barcelona
Blaugrana are looking for a long-term replacement for their No.1 goalkeeper.
Barcelona have always been unlucky with injuries over the past seasons. The number of their players who have suffered ailments has had a big impact on their campaigns. This term as well the club are in a similar situation as seven first-team players are out injured.
Now Marc-Andre ter Stegen is the fresh addition to their list of injuries. He will be out of action for the remainder of the season. The German international was stretched off during the stroke of half-time against Villarreal. It was later confirmed as a season-ending knee injury.
Barcelona immediately started looking for replacements to fill in the position for at least this season. They are now on the verge of signing Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny. But at some point, the club will have to look for a long-term replacement for Ter Stegen.
In the below piece, we take a look at the top three perfect successors for the 32-year-old.
3. Alban Lafont
Alban Lafont currently plays for Ligue 1 club Nantes. At such a young age, 25, the custodian has become the French club’s integral goalkeeper. He has started all five games, conceding only four goals, and keeping two clean sheets this season.
Lafont has been regarded as one of the highly talented goalkeepers. The Spanish club were earlier interested in signing him under Xavi but never made a move. However, he could be one of the few options for the club if they fail to sign other key alternatives next summer.
2. Alvaro Valles
Barca appear interested in Alvaro Valles, who La Blaugrana could consider a “market opportunity.” The gifted 27-year-old is not allowed to play for Las Palmas’ first squad due to a contract disagreement. Las Palmas are now entrenched in the bottom of LaLiga following their poor performance in the league this season which is not optimal. Due to the contract standoff, Barca might be able to get the goalie for a reduced price.
1. Diogo Costa
Diogo Costa, the goalkeeper for FC Porto, is highly regarded by Barcelona as a potential successor to their current No. 1. Superagent Jorge Mendes had made Costa, 25, an offer to play for Barça back in January 2022, but the agreement was not finalized.
However, Deco, the current sporting director, and the remainder of the sporting management staff have been keeping a close eye on the Portuguese international and think highly of him.
