Defending Champions beat Blues 2-0 in their first Premier League match of the season.

Manchester City cruised past with a comfortable 2-0 win over Chelsea in their first game of the 2024-25 Premier League season. The incumbent champions were better the majority of the time. They found the back of the net through their star striker Erling Haaland.

The former Borussia Dortmund striker curled the ball past Robert Sanchez following Bernardo Silva lay off to him. Chelsea, who once again spent a big chunk of money during the transfer window, came many times close to scoring a goal. Nicolas Jackson missed two excellent chances.

The Blues created many impressive goalscoring opportunities but lacked that cutting edge in front of the post.

They had the most possession in the first half under new manager Enzo Maresca. But they lacked that ruthless touch in front of the net. This saw City capitalize on their poor finishing. Former Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic curled the ball at the near post which ricocheted Sanchez.

City were the better side. They also had plenty of goalscoring chances. Anyhow, they managed to score when it counted the most and will take the three deserving points.

Meanwhile, Chelsea who once brought plenty of new signings during the transfer window will continue to develop under a new head coach.

However, there were signs that this side would certainly start clicking. It’s just a matter of time. They need rhythm and more games for players to gel with each other under the new manager’s system.

On the other hand, Man City will once again aim to defend the league title after winning four consecutive times last season. They will be looking to make more history by winning for the record fifth straight time.

But it’s too soon to predict. It’s just the start of the new season. City certainly knows when to come clutch during the crucial game. Their win over Chelsea was an indication that they will be looking to win the fifth title in a row.

Chelsea will be next back in action under the new manager and will next face Servette in the UEFA Conference League while City will take on Ipswich Town on Saturday at Etihad.
