The Cityzens have bagged the FA Cup title seven times.
The FA Cup, or the Football Association Challenge Cup, is the oldest cup competition not only in English football history but all over the world. The first-ever edition of the competition started in 1871. The Wanderers FC were the first ever club to win the FA Cup title back in March 1872.
Manchester City, who are known as one of the most renowned clubs in the English football scenario, have won the FA Cup seven times. They are now going to battle Crystal Palace for their eighth. This season has not been the best for them as they haven’t been able to bag a single piece of silverware.
But they have a chance to change that. They can at least go on to win the domestic cup competition.
History of Manchester City in the FA Cup
The Cityzens went on to win their first ever Football Association Challenge Cup title in 1904. In 2023, they won their seventh FA Cup. They can now go on to win their eighth FA Cup title if they prevail against the Eagles.
Manchester City have contested a total of 389 FA Cup fixtures and have emerged victorious in 208 of them. They have a win percentage of 53%, which is better than one win every two matches played. 70 of their matches in this competition have ended as a draw, and they have been defeated 111 times.
Man City have netted 754 goals in 389 games, which averages 1.94 goals per match. Fred Tilson, who joined Manchester City in 1928, is the top goal scorer for the Cityzens in the FA Cup, having scored a total of 22 goals.
They are in the joint sixth place in terms of lifting the FA Cup title. They stand alongside Aston Villa, who have also won the competition seven times. Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are the only teams with more titles.
Biggest Wins
Manchester City have three biggest wins to their name in the FA Cup. In January 1930, they defeated Swindon by a scoreline of 10-1. The Cityzens secured a 9-0 victory against Gateshead FC in 1933 and an 11-4 win over Crystal Palace in 1926.
Man City also have the joint-biggest win in an FA Cup final to their name. In 2019, they secured a 6-0 win over Watford. Recently, in the 2024-25 season, Pep Guardiola’s men defeated Salford City by a 8-0 scoreline in the third round of the competition.
Most Successful Managers
Pep Guardiola is the most successful manager for Manchester City in the FA Cup in terms of matches won. He has helped Man City secure 40 wins during his current run for the club. There are some other names as well who have helped Man City in this competition.
Wilf Wild has 22 wins, Les McDowall with 17 and Joe Mercer with 16.
