Manchester City identify Gianluigi Donnarumma as Ederson replacement
The Brazilian is linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League.
Manchester City have already identified Ederson’s replacement. They will move for Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, if the Brazilian decides to leave the club for the Saudi Pro League, with Al-Ittihad and Al-Nassr interested in signing the player.
Ederson has been a pivotal part of Pep Guardiola’s side, helping them clinch the UEFA Champions League and as many as six Premier League titles. His exit will put a big dent in Guardiola’s playing style, given the Brazilian possesses excellent attributes which help his club play out from the back.
However, there are yet to be any negotiations for the Brazilian to join any of the Middle Eastern clubs. But if he joins, then City might have to look for a custodian. Donnarumma, who joined PSG from AC Milan in 2021, has endured a mixed time in the city of Paris, winning only domestic titles.
His current deal with Luis Enrique’s side expires on June 30, 2026. The Italian is happy to remain in the French capital and might extend his contract as PSG try to ward off interest from other clubs. This will force City to look for other options.
But the former Milan goalie also has an interest in playing in the Premier League, and a move can never be ruled out. Currently, it will be too soon to predict his exit from the Ligue 1 club.
If Ederson leaves City, then Guardiola has Stefan Ortega to count on, who has always proved to be a reliable back-up goalkeeper. He could be their preferred custodian until the Sky Blues find one of the best in the job between the sticks.
Given that Donnarumma is still only 25 years old, he is one of the most gifted goalkeepers to have emerged from Italy. If Premier League champions manage to bring him in, City could have one of the most highly-regarded young goalkeepers who has the potential to be one of the best stoppers in the world.
Currently, Manchester City are in pre-season. They will be hoping that Ederson remains at the club for another season, allowing them to find an ideal replacement for the custodian. The reigning league champions will start their title defence in August.
