This could potentially be Pep Guardiola’s final pre-season tour with Manchester City as his club contract expires in 2025.
Reigning Premier League champions Manchester City are set to kick off their pre-season tour in a matter of days, with a total of four friendly matches scheduled in order to prepare for the upcoming 2024–25 season.
Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City claimed their fourth-straight Premier League title last season, bettering title contenders and second-placed Arsenal by just two points. However, the Citizens had to settle for just one trophy as they got knocked out by eventual winners Real Madrid in the Champions League, lost the FA Cup final to local rivals Manchester United, and also got kicked out of the Carabao Cup by Newcastle United.
The Cityzens have taken a strategic approach this transfer window, as they will look for potential recruitment only if a big-name player leaves the club. With that said, they have already completed one signing this summer, which is talented Brazilian winger Savinho from French outfit Troyes for a total package of €25 million.
On the other hand, the City board could potentially see a series of big-name departures this summer, with players such as Ederson, Kevin De Bruyne, and Julian Alvarez all linked with moves away from the club.
Another agenda high on Manchester City’s to-do list for this summer would be to extend the expiring contract of their legendary manager, Pep Guardiola, who just has a year left on his current deal.
Prior to their official pre-season tour, the Sky Blues haven’t played a friendly fixture with any team so far, as Guardiola is not a big fan of busy pre-season schedules. The majority of the squad made their return for pre-season on July 15, with players that participated in either the Euro 2024 or Copa America finals allowed more time off for vacation.
Just like several other Premier League clubs, Manchester City are also set to travel to the United States for their pre-season tour. During this period, they are scheduled to play four friendly matches.
In their opening match, the Sky Blues will face Scottish champions Celtic at the Kenan Memorial Stadium. This will be followed by exciting games against Italian giants AC Milan and Pep Guardiola’s former employers in the form of FC Barcelona.
To conclude their USA tour, City will lock horns with Premier League rivals Chelsea in a mouth-watering encounter at the Ohio Stadium. Just a week following that, Manchester City will face fierce rivals Manchester United in the FA Community Shield match.
