The Argentine star picked up a knee injury against Crystal Palace
Manchester United are concerned that Lisandro Martinez’s knee injury sustained against Crystal Palace could keep him out for the remainder of the season, according to Samuel Luckhurst.
In a Premier League match at Old Trafford, the 2022 World Cup-winning Argentina international suffered an unfortunate injury. After a seemingly harmless tackle with Eagles winger Ismaila Sarr, Martinez was carried from the field in tears.
According to the Manchester Evening News, Martinez is not expected to return to action in 2024–2025. It will take United about 24 hours to provide a conclusive diagnosis as they continue to evaluate the South American’s ailment.
After Lisandro Martinez was forced out of United’s heartbreaking 2-0 loss to Palace, Red Devils manager Ruben Amorim informed reporters:
“I think it is a serious situation. A bad situation for us and especially for Licha. I think we are going to see in the next days but I think it is a serious situation.
“It’s really hard on us, he’s not just a great player but a strong character in the dressing room. Especially in this moment, it’s hard for us. Now it is time for all of us to help Licha. He felt it and, when you are a player, you know when it is serious. Let’s hope for better days for him. We are here, like I say, to help him in this difficult moment.”
Lisandro Martinez had already sustained major injuries while playing in England. After having corrective surgery in September 2023, he was sidelined for four months and lost six weeks at the end of the 2022–2023 season due to a fractured metatarsal. Additionally, he missed eight weeks of action in February and March of last year due to damage to his medial ligament, followed by a six-and-a-half-week absence due to a calf issue.
Now the fans will hope that their star centre-back has not picked up any major injury during the current season that will keep him for an entire campaign as it will be a major setback for them.
