Manchester United identify Antonio Silva as alternative to Jarrad Branthwaite

The Red Devils are hesitant to pay Everton high fees for Branthwaite.
According to O Jogo, Manchester United are “convinced” that they can negotiate a deal for Benfica defender Antonio Silva for less than his £84 million release clause. The Red Devils are apparently lining up Silva as an alternative for Jarrad Branthwaite of Everton.
In their hunt for a new centre-back, the Red Devils looked at a number of possibilities before completing a deal for Lille starlet Leny Yoro. Yoro signed a long-term contract earlier this month.
The Frenchman, who had been brought in from Lille a few days previously, became Man United’s second summer addition.
The Red Devils, who want to rebuild their team, may soon focus on 20-year-old Silva. He is among the most talented defenders in Portugal right now.
According to reports, United feel they can secure the services of Silva “at a much more affordable price” than his £84 million (€100 million) release clause.
The 20-year-old’s versatility as a left and right defenseman will be beneficial to the Old Trafford hosts as they search for a backup for Lisandro Martinez.
Erik ten Hag is interested in Silva and Branthwaite because he wants a player who is more at ease with his left foot. After all, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof struggled last season without the Argentine defender Martinez.
Silva, one of the world’s most sought-after under-21 players, started playing regularly for Benfica in the 2022–2023 season. He has since accrued 60 senior league games for the Portuguese team, tallying five goals in all competitions.
Known as a “superstar” the adaptable defender has been linked to a number of Premier League teams this season, including Chelsea, who supposedly had a £52 million bid turned down by Benfica in January.
Benfica who are known for growing many young talents possess another youngster Joao Neves. Neves is pursued by PSG and the Portuguese side are set to demand a high fee for the midfielder.
