Manchester United hold internal talks over re-signing Mason Greenwood: Report

Manchester United now seem to have held initial talks to re-sign Mason Greenwood from Marseille, who is enjoying an impressive season.

As he rose through the ranks at Manchester United, Greenwood was anticipated to play a significant role for his childhood team for most of his career.

But once Mason Greenwood was charged with assault and attempted rape, Manchester United let him go.

The Crown Prosecution Service ultimately dropped the case against Greenwood because the likelihood of a conviction was greatly diminished by the withdrawal of important witnesses.

Man Utd also looked into the situation internally. By keeping Greenwood—who was loaned to LaLiga team Getafe during the summer transfer window in 2023—they faced a PR nightmare.

Mason Greenwood later joined Marseille for £26 million during the summer transfer window of 2024 after making an impression on the field for Getafe.

United hold key advantage in re-signing Mason Greenwood

Although Man Utd sold Mason Greenwood for less than his market value, they have a few advantages. It has a 50% sell-on clause and a possible buy-back clause.

The 24-year-old has made 63 appearances for Marseille in the last 18 months, scoring 42 goals and dishing out 12 assists. He has been strongly connected to other teams, including Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Manchester United would profit financially from these options, as they could secure an additional £25 million or more through their sell-on clause. But according to a report from Football Insider, they are “in talks” about “bringing Mason Greenwood back” to the team.

If this claim is true, Man Utd executives should hang their heads in shame. If they re-sign and he returns to the Premier League, it would still be a PR disaster.
