The Dutch left-back has been injured since the start of last season.
Manchester United are set to explore the market for a left-back after Tyrell Malacia once again suffered an injury setback and was not picked for the pre-season tour to the USA. While Luke Shaw has returned to training, the club will look to add another left-back.
Ever since Malacia joined United, the Dutch full-back has been out for an entire season with an injury, which has cast doubt on his playing career.
Now the Red Devils have drawn a three-man shortlist of left-backs, including Feyenoord’s David Hancko, former Chelsea star Marcos Alonso, and Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell.
Alonso is currently a free agent after Barcelona decided to avoid extending his deal at the club, while Mitchell has a year left on his Palace contract, and Hancko will be another option to look at.
Last season, the club was without a left-back, with Shaw also missing the second half of the season with an injury, and the club had to rotate Diego Dalot and Aaron Wan Bissaka in the left-back area.
Injuries were the key issue that affected United‘s performance last season. Hence, the club will look to reinforce many positions before the start of the next campaign.
Harry Amass is another left-back who has been given a chance to make a mark during the ongoing pre-season tour, and if he makes an impression on Erik ten Hag, he could be promoted to the first team for next season.
Sam Murray could be another option that could be considered for next season after the player featured in United’s last two games pre-season against Rosenborg and Rangers.
Now the board will assess their options for the left-back position, and if they feel they need to sign a new player for the position, then the aforementioned players could be signed. If they opt to go with an academy player, then either of the youngsters could get a chance to play for the senior team next season.
United have already made two signings so far and are set to continue spending until they feel the squad has enough depth for the upcoming term.
