Manchester United make initial inquiry for Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong: Report

The Red Devils have been pursuing De Jong for the past two years.
Manchester United have now once again reignited their interest in bringing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong to Old Trafford. The club have long been keen on signing the player since Erik ten Hag pushed the club to pursue the Dutchman.
Two years ago, the Premier League side went to extra lengths to secure the signing of the former Ajax player. But De Jong never had any intentions to leave Barcelona, despite the club being open to selling him.
This comes after United’s pursuit of Manuel Ugarte took a U-turn. The English club are now looking to focus on other signings. United feel PSG are asking for way too much. But the club remain in talks for the Uruguayan player’s signing.
The Red Devils are now looking at the prospect of signing Frenkie de Jong. They feel the deal can be completed for under £40 million. They have made initial contact with Barcelona over a potential deal and it remains to be seen if the Spanish club will entertain this talks with United.
Even if they are able to come to an agreement with the club, De Jong’s decision will be imperative to make the move happen. He has made it clear over the years that he has no desire to leave the Spanish team, so it won’t be simple.
If United fail to sign him once again, they also have other options, such as Burnley’s Sander Berge, Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi and Sofyan Amrabat, who was recently on loan at the club.
Ten Hag admires De Jong, having worked with him during his time at Ajax. United pushed for his signing in 2022 until the deadline day. But the transfer failed to transpire, which saw the club bring Casemiro from Real Madrid.
United have made two signings so far in this transfer window. They will hope to sign the Dutch midfielder, whose recruitment will be a massive success for United.
Frenkie de Jong has two years left on his deal. It remains to be seen if the player will extend his deal or decide to leave Barcelona this summer or in the next transfer window.
