United new Sporting Director wasn’t impressed with performance vs Coventry

Erik ten Hag’s future as Manchester United manager is in danger and he could be on his way out of Old Trafford.

Even though they defeated Championship team Coventry in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday, many felt that their poor performance was the last straw.

The Red Devils supporters flowed out of Wembley rather than celebrate a penalty shootout victory, which came after they had let slip a dominating 3-0 lead. United’s hierarchy saw the turning point firsthand.

Along with fresh part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who has taken over sporting management of the club, were co-chairmen Avram and Joel Glazer.

Meanwhile, Jason Wilcox, the new technical director, sat behind him.

The trio watched in confusion as Manchester United eventually prevailed on penalty kicks to get to the FA Cup final the following month. Victor Torp of Coventry had a goal disallowed for offside in the 121st minute due to the smallest of VAR margins.

Ratcliffe has not publicly endorsed Dutch coach Erik ten Hag, despite his promises to bring back the good times.

He has already implemented adjustments at the top, appointing Newcastle’s Dan Ashworth as sporting director and luring Omar Berrada from Manchester City to become the newly appointed chief executive.

Sir Dave Brailsford, Ratcliffe’s right-handed man, will now have a voice in the football division. Even if Erik ten Hag manages to pull off an unexpected championship victory over City on May 25, it is becoming less and less likely that he will be in charge.

They have little to no chance of making it into the Champions League and might not even play any European football in the upcoming season.

The visitors, who are at the bottom of the league, Sheffield United, might very well end up with their worst-ever Premier League finish of ninth.

Graham Potter, a former coach of Brighton and Chelsea, is the front-runner to take over in the summer.
