The current coach Ruben Amorim also finds himself on this list.

Manchester United’s history has witnessed many managers over the decades. Some have established themselves and gone on to create new records and inspire the club to trophies while some just turned out to be unsuccessful. But United as a club have enjoyed a lot of success and is one of the best clubs around the globe.

Many managers have received a chance to coach, while some failed some stamped their authority and created new records. We take a look at the six managers quickest to record five Premier League home defeats.

6. Alex Ferguson: 88 matches

Adding the word ‘quickest’ when Alex Ferguson suffered five Premier League home defeats won’t do justice. It took him long enough to record five losses as head coach. He was one of the best managers the club have ever seen. Since he announced his exit from the club, they still are struggling to assert league dominance.

5. Ole Gunnar Solskjær: 31 matches

Solskjaer was named Manchester United’s interim manager in late 2018, replacing José Mourinho for the remainder of the 2018–19 campaign. After winning 14 of his 19 games as manager, Solskjær agreed to a three-year deal on March 28, 2019, to become Manchester United’s permanent manager. Under his leadership, United were one of the league’s most enjoyable football teams to watch.

The Norwegian’s period, however, was short-lived as United chose to cut ties with their former player due to a sudden decline in performance. Solskjær ranks in fifth spot among the United’s managers with five quickest Premier League home losses.

4. Louis van Gaal: 30 matches

Louis van Gaal had a short stint at Manchester United where he did manage to win a cup before leaving the team. The Dutchman was hired in 2014 as he oversaw United for two years. He also had a difficult time turning the Red Devils into one of the top clubs.

Overall he had a disappointing time as United’s manager as he was dismissed in 2016. The former Netherland head coach ranks fourth among the United’s managers with five quickest Premier League home losses.

3. Erik ten Hag: 28 matches

Erik ten Hag was hired as Manchester United’s manager in 2022. United won the EFL Cup and FA Cup in back-to-back seasons when he was at the club. However, the club lacked improvement in the Premier League or any European tournament.

He was still given opportunities to improve the club’s prospects, but after several disappointments, the administration of the team chose to fire the Dutchman. In 2024, United fired him after a run of subpar performances. He ranks third among United’s managers to suffer five quickest Premier League home setbacks.

2. David Moyes: 14 matches

Given the amount of excellence Alex Ferguson brought to the club and left as their hero, it was always going to be difficult to succeed him.

David Moyes took Ferguson’s position as Manchester United’s manager in June 2013. However, he was fired just after ten months since the team was in seventh place in the league in April 2014 and could not make it to the European Championship. Prior to Ruben Amorim breaking his record, he was the quickest manager in United’s history to record five Premier League losses.

1. Ruben Amorim: 7 matches

So far Ruben Amorim’s appointment has been seen as a disaster. The Portuguese coach keeps adding unwanted records to his name. Their most recent league defeat to Crystal Palace saw the former Sporting head coach achieve another embarrassing record. He became the fastest United manager in PL history to record five defeats at home.
