After failing to qualify for European football in four of the previous five seasons, the Greens had very little to celebrate last season in LaLiga, ending in seventh place with 57 points.

After leading the team for five league games without a win in December & January and four straight losses in March, Manuel Pellegrini—who took over as manager of the team in August 2020—had several challenging periods during the season.
