The English club have won only one title after Sir Alex Ferguson left the club.

Barcelona’s on-loan forward from Manchester United, Marcus Rashford, has said that the team has occasionally been in “no man’s land” due to the “reactionary” approach taken by the club since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

Since Ferguson’s departure in 2013, United have had seven permanent managers, the most recent one being Ruben Amorim, who joined the team in November of last year to succeed Erik Ten Hag.

After seven years at United, Marcus Rashford departed the team in January to go on loan to Aston Villa. Then he was signed on a season-long loan deal by Spanish league winners Barcelona this summer.

“When Ferguson was in charge, not only were there principles for the first team but they were for the whole academy,” Rashford told the Rest is Football podcast.

Under Ferguson’s leadership, Rashford progressed through United’s academy but did not play for the senior team.

Rashford feels the club are in transition since Ferguson’s exit

Manchester United have struggled for consistent performance since Ferguson left the team. Moreover, they had their worst Premier League season ever last season, ending in 15th place. The club’s frequent manager changes, according to Marcus Rashford, have left them in “no man’s land.”

“So you could pick players from 15 years, a full generation, and they’d all understand the principles of playing the Manchester United way.

“People say we’ve been in a transition for years. To be in a transition, you have to start the transition. So it’s like the actual transition’s not started yet,” Rashford said.

He further added, “You see it with any team that’s been successful over a period of time — they have principles that any coach that comes in, any player that comes in, has to align to these principles or be able to add to these principles.

“Whereas at times I feel like United have just been … We’re hungry to win, so we’ll always try to adapt and to sign players that fit this system. But it’s reactionary.”

After three years in charge, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is United’s longest-serving manager since Ferguson. Since the latter’s resignation at the end of the 2012–13 season, United are yet to win the Premier League.
