Marseille plotting move for Manchester United star: Report

Rashford could be open to the idea of playing with Greenwood.

Marcus Rashford is expected to be offered a way out of Manchester United by French powerhouse Marseille, as well as the opportunity to rejoin old teammate Mason Greenwood.

Rashford, 27, who declared last month that he’s ready for a “new challenge,” has just until Monday, February 3, to figure out a way out of Old Trafford. Given that he has missed United’s previous nine games, the forward is obviously out of favor even though he would be willing to stay and battle for his spot under Ruben Amorim.

A week ago, AC Milan were the front-runner, but their pursuit of Kyle Walker took precedence. Barcelona, his ideal next club, haven’t shown much interest yet since they would have to cut a player from Hansi Flick’s team to make room for Rashford.

AS Monaco and Borussia Dortmund have also expressed interest, but Rashford doesn’t seem interested. With Marseille apparently reaching out to United executives to discuss a possible transfer, a new strategy is now on the table.

According to the French newspaper L’Equipe, Marseille are interested in the 60-time England international together with Mathys Tel of Bayern Munich.

In what would probably be a loan move, Rashford would reunite with Greenwood and other familiar faces in the south of France. The latter had spent the season on loan at Getafe before joining Roberto De Zerbi’s team in July.

Greenwood, who last appeared for the Red Devils in January 2022, was sold for a base price of €27.6 million (£23 million) plus an additional €4 million (£3.4 million). The former United academy sensation won Ligue 1 Player of the Month in December after scoring three goals in four games.

His performance has propelled Marseille to second place in the standings, five points ahead of Lille but nine behind Paris Saint-Germain, with 12 goals and three assists in 18 league games. Rashford had excellent chemistry with Greenwood at United. Both can once again reignite their partnership if the Ligue 1 club manage to bring the England international.
