Marseille's Mason Greenwood has requested to switch allegiance to Jamaica

Greenwood has made only one appearance for England.

Marseille forward Mason Greenwood has formally asked to change his allegiance and switch to the Jamaican national squad.

After leaving Manchester United last year after being suspended on allegations of attempted rape, assault resulting in actual bodily damage, and controlling and coercive behavior three years prior, Greenwood has made an effort to revive his career at Marseille.

Key witnesses later withdrew, and the charges were later dismissed after it was declared that “new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction.”

The 23-year-old has only received one England cap, in September 2020, and upon the charges being dropped, former manager Gareth Southgate downplayed the likelihood of a recall.

Greenwood will not be considered when Thomas Tuchel names his first England squad on March 14 because he is finalizing his registration with Jamaica, the country where his father was born.

Chief executive Mark Bullingham made the following statement during the FA’s 2024–2028 strategy unveiling: “So my understanding, and I’d have to double check my understanding, is he’s asked to switch. That’s happened formally, so he wouldn’t be able to [play for England in future] because you can only switch once.”

Bullingham responded when asked if Greenwood had been informed that he had no future with England: “No, we actually didn’t have that communication. I know people asked Gareth about him and Gareth was up front in that he hadn’t been in his thinking, because he hadn’t been performing at that level, so I’m not aware of any communication we had with him.

“I don’t think there was ever a request or anything like that. It just wasn’t one we got to, so it’s a personal decision by him.”

Greenwood first went on loan to Getafe from United, where he made 36 appearances and scored 10 goals. Greenwood is now enjoying a fantastic season at Marseille, scoring 15 goals in 24 Ligue 1 games so far. A potential summer transfer to Paris Saint-Germain has been mentioned.
