Men's Olympic Football: List of all winners
Brazil who are defending champions failed to qualify for Paris Olympics
Except for the first modern Summer Olympics in 1896 and the Games in Los Angeles in 1932, men’s football has participated in every quadrennial competition. In the meanwhile, the women’s competition began in Atlanta in 1996.
In 2024, there will be 16 countries competing in men’s football, and 12 teams in women’s football. Eight competitors will advance to the quarterfinals after being divided into groups of four.
Brazil are currently the reigning gold medalist but the irony is they won’t be able to defend it after they failed to qualify for the competition following their 1-0 defeat against Argentina.
The Olympic football tournament has advanced significantly since the Paris 1900 Games, when three club teams—Club Français from Paris, Upton Park from London, and Université de Bruxelles from Brussels—participated. Each side led their nation to the Olympics.
Male football players competing in the Olympics had to be under 23 starting in Barcelona in 1992. Since Atlanta (1996) only three players over the age of 23 were allowed to participate in the competition.
