The rivalry began in 1970 when Mexico defeated Ecuador twice within a week, first claiming a 4-2 victory before following it up with a 3-2 win in another friendly. Fourteen years later, the sides met again in the Colombus Cup, where Mexico edged Ecuador 3-2 to maintain their perfect record in the fixture. Those early meetings established El Tri as the dominant force in the rivalry.

The rivalry became more competitive during the 1990s and 2000s as the teams met regularly in Copa América. Mexico defeated Ecuador 2-0 in the 1993 semi-finals before the sides played out a 1-1 draw in the 1997 quarter-finals, with Mexico eventually prevailing in the penalty shootout.

Ecuador earned their first victory over Mexico in a 1996 friendly, but El Tri continued to enjoy success, including a memorable 2-1 victory in the group stage of the 2002 FIFA World Cup and another 2-1 win at the 2004 Copa América.

Mexico also defeated Ecuador 2-1 in the 2007 Copa América group stage, reinforcing their dominance in major tournaments.

The Meetings between the two nations have become increasingly balanced in recent years. Ecuador claimed notable friendly victories in 2010 and 2021, while also defeating Mexico 2-1 during the 2015 Copa América. Mexico responded with wins in several friendlies, including a thrilling 3-2 success in 2019.

The most recent encounter came in October 2025, when Germán Berterame gave Mexico an early lead before Jordy Alcívar equalised from the penalty spot to earn Ecuador a 1-1 draw in Guadalajara.
