Milan council approves San Siro sale to Inter & AC Milan

Both clubs will now demolish the stadium and build a new one.
The sale of San Siro to Inter and AC Milan was approved by the Milan City Council on Tuesday. It opens the way for the building of a new stadium and the demolition of the old one. After due diligence is finished in early November, the sale is anticipated to be finalised.
Only 10% of the stadium’s current structure is anticipated to remain under the plans for a new stadium, which would mostly demolish San Siro, the home field of the two rival clubs. While the new location is being identified, there is currently little knowledge of where the two teams will play.
Inter & Milan set for San Siro demolition after winning City council vote
On September 23, Milan and Inter declared that they had partnered with Foster + Partners and MANICA, two architectural companies, to oversee the construction of the new stadium, “with the aim of creating a state-of-the-art venue within a hub for social development in the area.”
The council had to vote on the agreement, and it passed with 24 votes in favour and 20 against.
Additionally, Foster + Partners is spearheading the construction of a brand-new stadium with a capacity of 100,000 for Manchester United, a Premier League team.
The opening event for the 2026 Winter Olympics, which will be staged by Milan and the northern Italian town and comune of Cortina d’Ampezzo, is scheduled for February in San Siro.
Until planning is authorised, construction on a nearby stadium site is not anticipated to begin for at least a year. The new stadium is anticipated to open in 2031, just in time for Italy and Turkey to co-host Euro 2032.
Since 1926, Milan have played at San Siro, and since 1947, they have shared it with Inter. Plans to construct a new stadium with 60,000 seats were announced by both teams in 2019. But political resistance and Italy’s heritage laws, which protect old buildings, caused the project to stall.
When was San Siro first opened?
It was first opened on 19 September 1926.
Whose home stadium was it?
It was Milan’s home stadium before they started sharing it with Inter.
Why do both clubs share the same stadium?
Inter Milan requested to share the San Siro facility in 1947, which was then the city’s main football facility. AC Milan and Inter Milan do so for practical and budgetary reasons.
