The Catalan club have recently signed a new goalkeeper.

Barçelona kept searching for a crack in Espanyol until they eventually located one. With one of their top players gone, the second Catalan team could only watch in silence. The goalie, who was born in Catalonia, has officially joined the Blaugrana and committed to a deal that would last until 2031.

In order to avoid having to wait for Marc-Andre ter Stegen to recuperate or question if Wojciech Szczęsny wanted to continue his career, Barca’s administration decided to secure the future between the posts. García is going to be the second-most-expensive goalie in Camp Nou’s history.

Join us as we take a look at the top five most expensive signings of goalkeepers in FC Barcelona’s history:

5. Claudio Bravo: €13.8m

Claudio Bravo joined Barcelona on June 25, 2014, for €13.8m. He succeeded Víctor Valdés as the first-choice goalkeeper and set a LaLiga record for the most minutes without giving up goals at the beginning of a season. He won two La Liga championships and one Champions League with Barcelona while he was at the club.

4. Marc Andre-ter Stegen: €13.8m

In the summer of 2014, Marc-André ter Stegen left Borussia Mönchengladbach to join FC Barcelona. However, because he was only deployed in Champions League games, the German goalie had to compete with Bravo for his spot.

Ter Stegen took over as the starting goalie after the Chilean left. Since then, the German has remained the team’s primary goalie ever since. But now that the club has Garcia, he can lose his top spot the following season.

3. Jasper Cillesen: €14.9m

In the summer of 2016, Jasper Cillessen joined Barcelona. The club paid €14.9m to sign him from Ajax, plus an additional 2 million euros for possible add-ons.

He took Claudio Bravo’s place and signed a five-year contract. Ter Stegen’s impressive performances and position as the number one pick limited Cillessen’s opportunities, even if he was a quality goalkeeper. In 2019, Valencia paid €35 million to bring him to the club.

2. Joan Garcia: €30.3m

After activating his €30.3m (£21.3 million) release clause, Barcelona acquired goalkeeper Joan Garcia from Espanyol, making him their second-most expensive goalie acquisition ever.

The 24-year-old received a six-year contract from the Spanish champions. Garcia was also linked to Manchester United and Arsenal, but he has chosen to stay in his home country of Spain.

He has made 67 appearances for Espanyol since making his debut in 2021. Garcia, who made the most saves (146) in the division, was instrumental in Espanyol’s safety in the top flight during the 2024-25 season and assisted them in achieving promotion to LaLiga in 2023–24.

1. Neto: €38.2m

The 29-year-old Neto became the club’s most expensive goalkeeper acquisition when he joined Barca for an initial €29.2m, with an extra €9 million expected in possible add-ons.

A €200 million buyout clause was added to his four-year deal at Camp Nou, keeping him to the Spanish champions until 2023. He joined Bournemouth on a free transfer in 2022.
