The Italian coach instead managed their local rival team, Everton.

In addition to admitting that Liverpool is his “dream” position, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti also disclosed that he declined an offer from the Italian national team.

According to reports, Carlo Ancelotti was in talks to become Liverpool’s next manager after Brendan Rodgers was fired in October 2015.

But in what turned out to be a turning point for the Reds, the club finally hired Jurgen Klopp. Carlo Ancelotti soon consented to take over Pep Guardiola’s position at Bayern Munich, which he formally started at the conclusion of the 2015–16 season.

Carlo Ancelotti eventually made his way to Merseyside when he took the Everton position in 2019, despite never having the chance to coach the Reds.

The veteran coach praised the Toffees and recalled the intense rivalry between the two teams in an interview with Italian journalist Armando Ceroni on Swiss station RSI.

Ancelotti said: “My dream was to coach Liverpool, but then I found myself at Everton and I experienced their rivalry, and now I am absolutely an Everton fan. I really liked the environment, because there is a spectacular passion for the colours. You also notice the suffering that the fan has for Liverpool, which for many years and still today is the best in the Premier League.”

Ancelotti rejected the Italy job

The Real Madrid manager also said that, before Roberto Mancini’s eventual appointment, he declined a chance to lead the Italian national team in 2018.

“I said no to the Italian national team because I didn’t feel like it,” he said. “I really like being on the pitch every day preparing for training, and the national team seemed like a part-time job that made me lose a bit of passion. Just for this reason”.

Although Ancelotti’s current Real Madrid contract expires in 2026, the road ahead appears difficult. The Spanish powerhouses are four points behind their bitter rivals Barcelona in LaLiga. They will also have to contend with Arsenal in the Champions League quarterfinal second leg after losing 3-0 in first leg.
