Netherlands predicted lineup for Romania clash in Euro 2024 Round of 16
The Dutch have a great chance to reach the final.
The Netherlands had a mixed campaign in the group stage after finishing third in the group of death comprising France, Austria and Poland. Finishing third is probably a blessing in disguise for them as they are given an easy route to the semi-final.
They will be facing a Romania side who have surprised everyone with their performance. If they manage to get past them, they will draw either Austria who has already defeated them or Turkey.
Netherlands Predicted lineup (Formation: 4-2-3-1)
GK: Bart Verbruggen
Bart Verbruggen has enjoyed an incredible rise to the top after a breakthrough campaign year at Brighton & Hove Albion. He was one of the stand-out players in the team and has carried his same form on the international stage. In the three matches he has played in the competition, he has kept one clean sheet and faced 15 shots. From these shots, he has conceded just two goals and has made an astonishing 12 saves to continue his impressive run of form.
RB: Denzel Dumfries
He was a huge miss for the Dutch in the last game against Austria as they missed his attacking outlet in the final third. Dumfries is an attacking-minded right-back who is known for his impressive runs from the right flank. He created two chances in the opening two matches while also delivering two excellent crosses. Dumfries is also equally adept at defending after registering seven recoveries, two tackles and one interception.
CB: Stefan De Vrij
Stefan De Vrij has developed an excellent partnership with Van Dijk in the heart of the defense for the team. De Vrij is a ball-playing defender who is comfortable in possession and doesn’t panic in tense situations. After a fine season for Inter Milan, he has continued to put in consistent performances for the national team. With Romania playing most on the counter-attack, he will be crucial in limiting the danger.
CB: Virgil van Dijk
Virgil van Dijk is one of the best defenders in the world and has continued to perform at the highest level for the national team. He has delivered fantastic performances in the group stage and will be hoping to make a similar impact here. His leadership at the back of the team has been top-notch. He has made 6 recoveries, won 15 duels and put his body on the line to make vital blocks.
LB: Nathan Ake
Nathan Ake has stepped into the left-back role excellently despite playing most of his career as a left-sided centre-back. He has shown an incredible attacking display in the group stage after creating four chances for his teammates in the opening matches. Ake also has an assist to his name after delivering a perfect ball to Cody Gakpo who scored the opening goal for Netherlands against Poland in the opening match.
CM: Tijjani Reijnders
Tijjani Reijnders has in a short time established himself in the national team. His ability to do the defensive duties as well as make darting runs from midfield makes him a dangerous outlet for the team. Reijnders is known for his long-range efforts as he can score some thunderous goals highlighted by seven shots in the group stage. He has made an all-round contribution in the opening matches making 9 recoveries, 3 tackles and 3 blocks.
CM: Jerdy Schouten
After an outstanding season with PSV Eindhoven, Schouten was given the chance to lead his nation against Poland. And he didn’t disappoint either, delivering a wonderful performance in the middle of the park. Schouten shielded the defenders effectively while making some excellent diagonal passes. His stats from the group stage include 15 recoveries, 2 tackles and interceptions.
RW: Donyell Malen
Donyell Malen had an incredible campaign with Borussia Dortmund after he helped them compete in the Champions League final. However, they were unfortunate to lose the event, and still, they can be proud of their performance. He finished the season with 15 goals and added another 3 assists to cap off an outstanding season. So far, he hasn’t been able to make his mark but will be raring to score in this match.
AM: Xavi Simons
The rising star in Dutch football, Xavi Simons has burst onto the scene as one of the exciting talents in world football. He had a successful season on loan at RB Leipzig where he netted 10 goals and made 13 assists to finish the season on a brilliant note. He has made 3 appearances in the group stage and has yet to open his account. He made a perfect assist in the last match against Austria but could not guide them to victory.
LW: Cody Gakpo
Cody Gakpo has been the saviour for the team in the opening stages after netting against Poland and Austria. He has particularly looked like a threat from the left wing as his direct runs and movements have caused plenty of problems for the opposition. This season has been incredible for him after helping Liverpool qualify for the Champions League places by scoring 16 goals and assisting another 6.
ST: Memphis Depay
Memphis Depay has shown some promising moments in the false nine position in the opening matches. His movements and hold-up play have been excellent to watch. Depay has linked excellently with his fellow strikers to create scoring chances for the team. With the Romania defense maintaining a low block, Depay will be crucial in unlocking the defense with his excellent movements and run.
