Netherlands vs Sweden: Five key battles to watch out for in FIFA World Cup 2026

Sweden lead Group F ahead of their game against the Netherlands.
After match week 1, Group F is delicately poised in the FIFA World Cup 2026. Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands played out a 2-2 draw in their first game, and they need a win in matchweek 2 to build a strong case for qualification to the knockout stage.
Sweden, on the other hand, will confirm their spot in the round of 32 stage if they beat the Netherlands. With the match set to get underway on Saturday, here are five key battles on the pitch that could decide the outcome of this FIFA World Cup match between these two European sides.
Virgil van Dijk vs Alexander Isak

Both Liverpool players scored in their respective opening games in the FIFA World Cup 2026. Virgil Van Dijk and Alexander will be head-to-head throughout the game in this key Group F match.
Isak specifically had a special game against Tunisia, having scored one goal and provided two assists to his teammates. The Swedish striker will be high on confidence against the Dutch but Van Dijk is a veteran at the back and will try to mark Isak closely in this game.
Micky Van de Ven vs Viktor Gyokeres
Aside from Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyokeres is another big name in the Swedish line-up and the Arsenal striker also got a goal and an assist in the 5-1 win over Tunisia. With both Isak and Gyokeres playing upfront, the latter tends to move towards the right to allow the Liverpool striker more room, this in turn would bring Micky Van de Ven into the game.
Van de Ven, the Tottenham left-back was decent in Sweden‘s first group game against Japan. However, he has picked up a yellow card and if he is booked again against Sweden, he would miss his next game. Gyokeres would try to put pressure on the defender and also stretch the defence.
Ryan Gravenberch vs Yasin Ayari
Ryan Gravenberch made a huge impact on the pitch for the Netherlands against Japan by assisting both the goals for his nation in the 2-2 draw. Yasin Ayari too was the star for Sweden against Tunisia with two goals against Tunisia.
Both midfielders will directly go up against each other on the pitch this Saturday with the stakes very high. Aside from their attacking responsibilities, both midfielders would also have to drop to help their defenders in this match and any error could severely hurt them.

Crysencio Summerville vs Victor Lindelof
The West Ham United youngster was a constant menace to Japan’s backline in the Netherlands’ opening World Cup game. Summerville was eventually rewarded with a goal in the 70th, that would eventually get his team a point.
Victor Lindelof, the left centre back for Sweden will be tasked to keep Summerville in check in the next game. Lindelof made 3 clearances and 2 recoveries against Tunisia but the Netherlands will be a much tougher entity to play against.
Cody Gakpo vs Gustaf Lagerbielke
Cody Gakpo was quiet in front of goal in gameweek 1, however, he was quite active in the midfield as he won 7 duels against the Tunisians and also stitched forward 27 passess to his teammates.
Gustaf Lagerbielke will be right sided defender in Sweden’s back three. The 26-year-old Braga defender will have to keep a keen eye on Cody Gakpo throughout the match as the Dutchman likes to take shots from near and afar.
