The Dutch thumped the Blågult with ease.

For their second match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Netherlands faced off against Sweden at the Houston Stadium.

The Ronald Koeman-led side have now secured their first win of the mega competition this year. They were held to a draw by Japan in their opening game due to their poor efforts in defence. The Netherlands national football team worked on their mistakes and did not let the Swedish attack score more than one goal.

The Swedish men’s national football team will be kicking themselves. Their overall performance was not up to the mark and Graham Potter will be looking to come up with the necessary change in tactics for their remaining group stage outing against the Samurai Blue.

Five important things we learned from this match:

1. Ronald Koeman responds with tactics

The Netherlands national football team came up with high pressing from the start and secured a dominating 5-1 victory to go on top of the table in the end. After the Dutch were held to a draw by Japan, the Critics were quick to mention that Ronald Koeman made several mistakes with his tactics. But with today’s performance, he has responded with well-balanced team play and three important points.

2. Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo with a brace each

Brian Brobbey helped the Oranje to establish control of the game early. He scored a sensational brace in just under 20 minutes and the Swedish side looked completely under pressure. Cody Gakpo doubled the lead at the start of the second half after scoring two important goals. This helped the Netherlands secure an easy win.

3. Flaws in defence by Sweden

The Graham Potter-led side were not very calm and composed against the Dutch defence, costing them three crucial points. The Sweden national football team allowed the Netherlands to take as many chances as they liked. This is surely how you must not perform on the grandest stage of them all. The Blågult must learn from their mistakes heading into the final group stage game.

4. Anthony Elanga with a consolation goal

Anthony Elanga was brought on the pitch in the 56th minute and his performance was commendable against the Oranje. Just three minutes later, he found the net with a sensational goal. He was the sole goal scorer for the Swedish side despite the names like Viktor Gyokeres and Alexander Isak in the final third. Bart Verbruggen did an exceptional job between the sticks for the Dutch.

5. Strong squad depth a strength for the Dutch

Crysencio Summerville came on the field in the 46th minute. He first assisted a goal and then went on to score the fifth and final goal for the Netherlands national football team. The all-time leading goal scorer for the Orange also came in from the bench to assist a goal. This strong squad depth will continue to play an important role for them for the remainder of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
