Both New Zealand and Egypt drew their opening FIFA World Cup 2026 matches

Matchweek 1 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 has concluded, and Group G has emerged as one of the more interesting pools. New Zealand, Egypt, Belgium, and Iran are all tied on 1 point apiece, making matchweek 2 crucial.

New Zealand and Egypt are the two lower-ranked teams in the group; hence, this game is crucial for both nations. Here are the five key player battles on the pitch that can determine who wins this Group G fixture.

5. Omar Marmoush vs Finn Surman

Omar Marmoush had five shots in the first game, but none were on target. The Manchester City star was quite active, and if he combines well with Mohamed Salah in the next game, it could completely tip the game in Egypt’s favour.

Finn Surman was the pick of the defenders for New Zealand against Iran; however, he will face tougher opposition in matchweek 2. The 22-year-old made 16 defensive contributions in his team’s last game, and he will pose a big challenge to the Egyptian attack.

4. Mohanad Lasheen vs Marko Stamenic

Mohanad Lasheeb and Marko Stamenic will be the anchors of Egypt’s and New Zealand’s midfield, respectively. Both players will primarily look to intercept or recover their opponent’s attacks. This duel will directly influence the pace of the game and who maintains the majority of possession.

3. Mohamed Hany vs Elijah Just

Elijah Just was the man of the match for New Zealand against Iran, scoring both goals in the 2-2 draw for his nation. The winger also made 7 recoveries to help his defenders in what was an almost perfect match for the 26-year-old.

With Elijah riding high on confidence, the job of keeping the New Zealander under check would fall to Mohamed Hany. The Egyptian right back generally likes to go up the pitch and help his team in attack. However, he will have to be careful of Elijah Just and keep true to his defensive responsibilities.

2. Hamdi Fathy vs Chris Wood

Chris Wood is coming off a good performance against Iran, where he picked up two assists. The 6’3” tall New Zealand striker can be decisive with his headers, and he has good shots in him as well. His height, in particular, would make his duel with Hamdi Fathy interesting.

The Egypt defender is a few inches shorter than Chris Wood, which would give him a disadvantage in defending set pieces. However, Fathy was good, making 11 defensive contributions against Belgium in the opener, and the New Zealand attack should be easier to handle on paper.

1. Mohamed Salah vs Liberato Cacace

The Egyptian king is lacing his boots for what is most likely his last FIFA World Cup. Mohamed Salah was the most active player on the pitch against Belgium, and he also got the assist for Emam Ashour’s goal.

Salah will tend to play centrally and through the right wing, getting him eye-to-eye with New Zealand’s left back Liberato Cacace. The Wrexham defender had an average game against Iran, and Salah would be eager to build up the pressure on the 25-year-old from early on in the match.

When and where will the New Zealand vs Egypt game be played?

The game will be played at BC Place in Vancouver on Sunday, June 21.

In what group are these two sides drawn?

They are drawn in Group G alongside Iran and Belgium.
