The Magpies’ injuries to defenders will force the club to look for a centre-back in the summer
Newcastle are planning a £25 million transfer raid for Dean Huijsen, a 19-year-old centre-back for Juventus who is presently on loan at Roma.
After sacrificing Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles to permanent knee injuries, Eddie Howe is facing a defensive dilemma that will require attention in the summer transfer window.
After undergoing ACL surgery, Botman will not be able to play until late 2024, and club captain Lascelles may not be able to play until the following year.
Due to the two setbacks, Newcastle are placing a higher priority on defensive reinforcements, and St. James’ Park officials are hopeful that they can sign two new centre-backs in time for the 2024–2025 campaign.
Huijsen is one of their top goals after receiving positive feedback while on loan at Roma this season. Nevertheless, the young player has already stated that he wants to stay at Juventus and establish himself in Turin.

The Spanish U21 international who was born in the Netherlands has also piqued the curiosity of Borussia Dortmund. Huijsen signed a new long-term deal with the Old Lady last summer, extending his contract until 2027, after making 40 appearances for Juventus’ U19 and Next Gen teams and scoring 10 goals. Before his presence helped inspire an improvement in form in January, he had only played 12 minutes for Roma in Serie A.
Newcastle are also one of the teams vying for the highly sought-after free agents Lloyd Kelly and Tosin Adarabioyo, who could assist in overcoming the difficulties caused by Premier League PSR Regulations. When their current contracts expire in late June, it appears that both players will be leaving their respective teams, Fulham and Bournemouth.
After spending more than £400 million on new players since Howe’s hiring in 2021, the Magpies will need to exercise caution when it comes to FFP going forward.
Former sports director Dan Ashworth acknowledged in 2022 that the team was open to trading elite players in order to continue developing. Ashworth is currently on gardening leave as a result of Manchester United’s approach.
