The Magpies broke their 70-year trophy drought.

Newcastle United stunned a weary Liverpool team at Wembley with a flawless performance to win the Carabao Cup (EFL Cup), their first trophy since 1969.

After earning his first England call-up on Friday morning, Dan Burn completed an incredible week by opening the score with a precise Kieran Trippier corner just before halftime.

After Bruno Guimaraes’ goal was ruled out early in the second half, Alexander Isak compensated for it shortly later by hammering home a knockdown from Jacob Murphy to double the lead.

After two replacements combined to create their first real chance of the game in extra time, Arne Slot’s team finally came back into the game, with Harvey Elliott cutting through the Newcastle defense to feed Federico Chiesa, who found the back of the net.

However, this was much too little, much too late, as Eddie Howe, Burn, and Isak made Geordie history by swashbucklingly ending football’s most notorious trophy drought.

During the first half, Newcastle United had the better opportunities, with Bruno Guimaraes’ cushioned header from close quarters being too soft to bother Caoimhín Kelleher and Sandro Tonali’s attempt going wide of the right-hand post.

After Kieran Trippier was handled in the box due to pressure from Luis Diaz, referee John Brooks turned away Liverpool’s plea for a penalty, and VAR cleared it. VAR determined that Trippier was using his outstretched arm for balance.

The Magpies’ first goal at Wembley in 25 years sent the visiting supporters into thrills when Dan Burn, a steady threat at corners in the first forty-five minutes, headed Trippier’s deep delivery into the bottom-left corner shortly after that reprieve, giving Newcastle the goal their first-half performance needed.

Newcastle United believed they got their second goal in the second half when Isak poked home from close range. However, the referees determined Bruno Guimaraes meddled with play from a position of offside.

After Barnes and Murphy wasted more chances, Federico Chiesa sprang the Newcastle United offside trap and tapped calmly past Nick Pope to give Liverpool hope of forcing extra time as the clock reached the midway mark of eight minutes of added time.

However, Newcastle played out the final six minutes of the EFL Cup to cause frenzied scenes as they celebrated ending their agonizing 70-year trophy wait.
