The Magpies are experiencing an injury crisis at the club.
Newcastle United manager Howe disclosed that Nick Pope was sick, after he made a comeback to the team on Boxing Day against Manchester United after missing a month due to a groin injury.
Defenders Emil Krafth, Tino Livramento, Jamaal Lascelles, Dan Burn, Sven Botman, and Kieran Trippier are all now sidelined, and Anthony Elanga recently joined William Osula on the injured list.
However, Howe, who oversaw Burnley from 2011 to 2012, is committed to finishing 2025 with a win away from home.
Eddie Howe provides updates on Newcastle United injury news
Nick Pope
- Possible return date: 30th December vs Burnley
“Nick had really limited training time for (the Manchester United) game. He declared himself fit and then was subsequently ill right before kick-off and wasn’t feeling great – so it was probably fortunate that he wasn’t playing (on Boxing Day).
“I’ll take a view from the training that I see, although it’s been limited so far. I need to see that Nick’s back to his very best – and Aaron (Ramsdale)’s played well in his absence, so I’ll make a call.”
Yoane Wissa
- Possible return date: 30th December vs Burnley
“With Yoane, I think we’ve got to look after him. He’s still relatively early in his return to full fitness. He did really well in his one start, against Fulham – I was really pleased with him on that day, and there’ll be other opportunities.
“The problem for us is, with our schedule, playing every three, four days, I don’t think he’s in a condition where he could start regularly at the moment. But hopefully we can manage him to that point at some stage.”
Anthony Elanga
- Expected return date: Crystal Palace (H) 04/01.
The Newcastle United forward, Elanga, suffered a knock at the end of the Chelsea match six days prior; he missed the Boxing Day loss away to Manchester United.
Howe said: “Yeah, he just took a knock against Chelsea. We don’t think it’s too serious. We hope to have him back pretty quickly.”
Kieran Trippier
- Expected return date: Crystal Palace (H) 04/01.
In the week before the 2-1 victory over Manchester City on November 11, the Newcastle United full-back developed a hamstring problem.
Sven Botman
- Expected return date: Crystal Palace (H) 04/01.
Botman had an injection to try to fix a back problem; therefore, he hasn’t played in the last eight games.
Jamaal Lascelles
- Expected return date: TBC
Lascelles is currently back in the medical room, but he started training again this week.
Emil Krafth
- Expected return date: Burnley (A), 30/12.
During the international break in November, the Sweden international had a knee injury
Will Osula
- Expected return date: Crystal Palace (H) 04/01.
Osula has not been seen since withdrawing from the matchday squad for the Champions League victory over Athletic Club on November 5.
Tino Livramento

- Expected return date: AFC Bournemouth (H), 10/01.
After having to leave the game against Fulham in the 74th minute last Wednesday, the Newcastle United full-back sustained his second knee injury of the season.
Dan Burn
- Expected return date: AFC Bournemouth (H), 10/01.
Burn suffered a rib injury and a punctured lung after engaging in a challenge with Nordi Mudieke in Newcastle United’s 1-0 loss to Sunderland.
Sam Alabi
- Possible return date: 30th December vs Burnley
“Sam’s done well when he’s trained with us. He’s so young and we’ve got to be mindful of that, look after him and protect him and nurture him, but he’s certainly got a lot of talent.
“He’s got a great attitude as well. I love his fearlessness and how he’s adapted himself to the group. He’s got a great future ahead of him if he continues to work hard.”
