Newcastle United in talks with Crystal Palace to sign Marc Guehi

Guehi enjoyed an incredible Euro 2024 with England this summer.
Newcastle United have launched a new set of talks with Crystal Palace over the signing of defender Marc Guehi. The Tyneside have not been active enough this summer, signing Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer from Bournemouth, while Vlachadimos Odysseas and John Ruddy have joined to bolster the goalkeeper department.
However, now the Magpies are hoping to reinforce their defence, They have targeted Palace defender Guehi. The former Chelsea star was impressive during Euro 2024, starting all games except one due to suspension.
His performance has further solidified his status in the Premier League and many clubs have been lining up to make a move for the defender. However, his emergence has not been smooth after coming from the Blues academy.
He was loaned to Swansea City, where he demonstrated his qualities. After returning, Crystal Palace showed interest and acquired his services in July 2021. He has been their instrumental defender, captaining the club in recent seasons.
The defender has two years remaining on his contract. The player has not indicated that he will sign a new deal, which further puts his future at the club in a dilemma and provides a path for other clubs to sign the centre-back in the summer.
Now that the Magpies have made the first move after launching the talks to sign the player, it will be interesting to see how much Crystal Palace will demand for their star defender.
Newcastle see this acquisition as a “significant coup” which will substantially reinforce their backline for the upcoming season. They will once again hope to contend for the top-four spot.
Marc Guehi’s addition will transform Newcastle’s defence, which has been leaky in past campaigns. The club have decent options at the back in Fabian Schär and Jamaal Lascelles but the 24-year-old’s addition will further make their defence formidable.
Last season, the club was mired in injuries, with many star players unavailable for the remainder of the season, they finished seventh. Now the Reds will hope to regroup for the upcoming season.
